Some
say I’m a
clown. Other’s have met my evil twin…
Leroy. Who you meet may depend on which side of the negotiating
table you’re sitting.
I love living at the beach. For some reason… it just makes me happy. If
I were to leave the beach… I would leave Los Angeles… maybe even the
USA.
Most of my friends are
artists,
musicians and
entrepreneurs. But, in 1999... many who were renting in Venice had
to move east as prices moved north. Shortly thereafter… the loft I was
renting went up for sale. Seeing the writing was on the wall...
literally… I became a Realtor… sold the
loft for my
landlord… and bought another of my own.
Buying and selling properties here is probably more difficult and
interesting than anywhere else in the world. However, owning is the only
way to truly prevent the unfortunate yet inevitable fate of renters at
the beach. According to UCLA’s Anderson Business School… 15 million more
people are coming to Los Angeles over the next 20 years.
Where are they going to live? Only about 150 places are currently
available in Venice…. and inventory is at an all time high!!!
Real estate is in my blood. Nan, Mom, Uncle George and I were all born
on the family’s
horse farm in Kentucky. After an unscrupulous developer swindled my
senile great grandmother out of it over lunch and mint juleps one
summer’s day… virtually all of my relatives became Realtors, builders
and… developers. My favorite uncle built his
company to be the biggest in Kentucky before he sold it and retired
to his
island in Maine.
After
college, I sold my dad’s houses as his broker. Dad was one of the
largest independent homebuilders in Florida. He was also an MIT guy who
graduated with their design award. Dad was “green” in the ‘70s back when
that referred only to the color of grass. Furthermore… he was one of the
1st homebuilders do use computer aided design (CAD). Dad
designed and constructed very cool cribs.
But the people there weren’t. So I picked up stakes and headed west to
follow my dream… music.
I’ve always been lucky. Shortly after arriving in town I got on the game
show,
Catch Phrase,
and… WON!!!
Then late one night while wandering around an underground after hours
party called
Black Radio on Hollywood Blvd… I discovered a band named
Jane’s Addiction.
The game show money allowed me to record their 1st
album and start an indie
label to release it. That
24 Hour Party People ride lasted through the early ’90s.
Afterwards… battered and bruised by the experience… I moved to Venice
and became addicted to
yoga. Life was good… but nothing lasts forever.
Record royalties allowed me an early retirement… or so I thought. Then
downloading killed that gravy train just as the housing boom nuked
paradise.
So… I went back to work. And… should we hook up…
